Chiral Property Control by Crystal Phase Transition

Keywords
Chiral Crystal, Soft Crystal, Crystal Phase Transition, CD spectrum, Organic Crystal, Chirality Control

Research Outline

Crystal structures also have the chirality. Achiral molecules usually crystallized in achiral crystal structure. However, achiral molecules sometimes crystallize in chiral structures such as left quartz and right quartz. This chiral crystallization of achiral compounds is an attractive research topic especially for the chiral discrimination technology and the origin of the homochirality. This researcher focused on the chiral crystallization of achiral compounds and found that some achiral organic compound can crystallized both chiral an achiral crystal structures and cause the crystal phase transition from achiral structure to chiral structure.

Chirality generation via crystal phase transition

Based on this phenomenon, the mechanism of chirality generation in crystal phase transition and the chirality control by the crystal phase transition will be investigated. Furthermore, soft crystals with controllable crystal chirality by external stimulation will be developed.
